Josh Howard and the National Anthem

18 September 2008 No Comment

Dallas Maverick forward Josh Howard dissed the National Anthem over the weekend, saying he didn’t celebrate it because he’s black. Ever the PR nightmare for the Mav’s, the people that surround him are trying desperately to spin this some positive way.  In the past year, he’s been arrested for speeding, told a radio show he smokes pot, and threw himself a birthday party the night before a playoff game.

Now, Josh had the right to free speech. It says so in the U.S. Constitution. The same constitution that Josh can barely read because he only scored a 500 on his SAT’s.  Somehow, he still managed to go to prep school and get into Georgia Tech. However, listening to him talk and knowing how marijuana tends to mush the melon, I would be willing to bet he couldn’t score a buck fifty on it today.

Anyway, I’m not as freaked out about this as some people. I can think of a few people who have disrespected the anthem just by singing it. Instead it reminds me that we do live in a great country. A country where a semi-literate man can get a college degree for being named All-Conference. A country where a man can earn millions of dollars playing a kid’s game while trashing the system that makes it possible. A country where a spoiled brat like this will never understand the people who sacrifice like this.  God Bless America!

Carry on, Citizens!
