Kansaska Team Name Contest
Kansaska, my next novel is well underway. It won’t be released until this spring, but you can help with the creative process and pick up a free t-shirt. Here’s the deal:
I have nine teams to name in the mythical Kansaska Retail Agricultural Products League. The tenth team has already been named the Portis Eskimos. You can see their logo here. The other towns in the league are:
McPherson, Vesper, Moonlight, and Parallel in Kansas.
Beaver City, Minden, Geneva, Red Cloud, and Fairbury in Nebraska.
The book is set in 1948. Check out Stall & Dean’s Blue Route Collection for a sample of team names and logos of that era.
Post your team name/mascot idea in the comments section of this post. Don’t forget to leave a contact email. You can enter up to nine times -once for each town. The winner for each town will receive a free t-shirt with the name and logo of the team you helped create. You will receive a thank you in the credits section of the upcoming novel Kansaska. One Grand Prize winner will receive a t-shirt, mention in the credits, autographed copy of Kansaska, and the envy of all your friends!
The contest will run until March 3rd. Winners will be announced on March 6th.
Carry on, Citizens!

My submission for Parallel… the Parallel Lions
I’m so dissappointed that Portis already has a team name. I was going to suggest the Portis Potties. I must say I am very proud of my daughter’s contribution for the Parallel Lions! The nut doesn’t fall far from the tree! I’ll continue to think on the other cities and get back. I want to win something!
Teresa,
That might be a? difficult logo design!
Jeff
To get the ball rolling, here are my entries (bad puns in parentheses) . And I declare myself as an “ineligible receiver” of any prizes due to my involvement with this.
McPherson Mighty Midgets
Vesper Fighting Frogs
Moonlight Ghosts (Moonlight Madness)
Parallel Peppers (Parallel Dimensions)
Beaver City Bats (Beaver City Damned)
Minden Maniacs (Minden Halls)
Geneva Gremlins (Geneva Conventions)
Red Cloud Thunderbirds
Fairbury Phantoms
Now get to posting!
OK, so here’s what I’ve come up with so far:
Moonlight Sun Otters (musical reference – say it fast)
McPherson Struts
Red Cloud Reactors (University of Nebraska-Lincoln Agricultural Client Services include Batch Reactors + the Red Cloud makes it funny)
That’s it for now.
Okay, I just got this entry via email from Linda Wright:
McPherson – Macs
Vesper – Vigils
Moonlight – Madness
Parallel – Universe
Beaver City – Dams
Minden – Marvels
Geneva – Gnomes
Red Cloud – Chiefs
Fairbury – Flames
Good Work Linda
The Moonlight Grahams (after the pitcher/doctor played by Burt Lancaster in Field of Dreams).
The McPherson Cabers
Motto: “We’ll beat you… with a really big stick!”
And their colors could be plaid!
Jeff, Since I grew up in Portis, Kansas, I would have submitted the two team names used back in the ’40s, but will try something else.
Red Cloud – Arrowheads
Beaver City – Dynamos
Moonlight – Shadows
Geneva – Generals
Parellel – Panthers
Vesper- Vipers
And still considering
Oh! And I forgot! The Fairbury Karnies!
How about these?
The Vesper Bells
The Minden Minions
The Moonlight Moonlighters
- OR -
The Moonlight Ers
The Beaver City Fur Traders
The Red Cloud Thunderheads
You just can’t beat the Parallel Lions.
C’mon, this is obvious: Beaver City Bangers. Mascot: a Pam Anderson look-alike.
Only other suggestions: Minden Minnonites (great logo potential, but not as good as a deviate mind, a frosted mug and a Mac could create for that first one);
Geneva Conventions;
the McPherson Elles.
I expect a T-shirt.
Here’s my submits-
McPherson Millies
Vesper Haystacks
Moonlight Pupperduckles
Parrelell Padderwacks
Beaver City Beavers
Minden Wafflenuggetts
Geneva Conventions
Red Cloud Masonbrewers
Fairbury Figrangers
As a generation removed from Portis, Kansas, I enjoyed thinking of possible names.
McPherson Marauders
Vesper Vipers
Moonlight Mudbugs
Parallel Patriots
Beaver City Bearcats
Minden Minutemen
Geneva Grasshoppers
Red Cloud Rattlers
Fairbury Falcons

Vesper “Pray-ers”
Moonlight “Glows”
Parallell “Angles”
Beaver City “Chewers”
Minden “Haulers”
Geneva “Lakers”
Red Cloud “Chiefs”
Firbury “Hatchets”
All have either a gramatic, historic or goeographical relation. If its fictional, why not some comic gramatic licence as well!
Regards!
Carl
Okay Jeffreaux – here are my suggestions. I was really excited to have thought of the McPherson Elles! Then….I saw that someone had beat me to that little tidbit of fun.
Vesper Vortex
Moonlight Sonatas (why not just go for it? Logo could be all orchestral stuff)
Parallel Bars
Beaver City Citizens
Minden Nedmins (a palindrome w/an s)
Geneva Conventioniers
Red Cloud Warriors
Fairbury Falcons
Be brave – be strong!
delana

Vesper Sparrows
Mascot – Bow & “Sparrow” that shoots souvenir sparrows into crowd
…a google search for ‘Vesper’ gave me sparrows, so maybe google should get credit if this wins, but these birds are found in Kansas.
[...] Seeking inspiration for my submittals to the “Name the K.R.A.P. Teams” competition going on over at Trolley Dodgers I started looking for unusual team names and mascots on the web. [...]
Beaver City – Stumps
Vesper – Nemo’s (check out the town history)
Minden – Cornhuskers (can anyone think of a DUMBER name?)
Fairbury – Hoosiers (I just did)
Emerald City Toe , Toes
Wichita, Linemen
Colon, Fiber-ets
Beaver City Flying Doctors (check out the city history); the mascot could be someone in a doctor’s white coat & stethoscope wearing an old leather flying helmet. Or, the logo could be an old biplane with a red cross on it.
Minden Platters where the team logo could be a dinner plate with a glove on it.
Fairbury Trailers (the town sits on the old Oregon Trail); uniform logo might feature an old conestoga wagon
Red Cloud O Pioneers!, or just Pioneers! (with the exclamation point, of course); what better than Willa Cather as the mascot.
McPherson Birdseyes (town was named after General James “Birdseye” McPherson); mascot might be a bird with big googly eyes, or an Indian scout.
I’d agree: Parallel Lions is perfect!
-Beaver City Bobcats
-McPherson Crows
-Moonlight Possums
-Vesper Villagers
-Parallel Pythons
-Minden Applepickers

I picked other towns than mentioned and came up with these names.
Omaha–Sliders or Beefeaters
North Platte- Platters
Scottsbluff-Sandlotters or Sandhillers
Lincoln–Pioneers
Kearney- Ogallalas aka Ogies by fans and LaLas by foes(Kearney is pronounced Carney fyi)
Grand Island–Sodbusters
Dodge City–Marshalls
Salina–Prairie Dogs aka Dem Dawgs
Topeka-Tops Logo is a spinning top or bat(vertical bat of course)
Witchita Wizards
Red Cloud is the home of Willa Cather but somehow I don’t think you want to call the team the catheters
sorry my web site cut me off I think that you should change the names of the towns they are too small.
I think that the towns you have picked are too small to have a team. some of them are less than 2000 people. Most semipro teams I know play in about a town of about 12–16000 people. But since you have named the towns I’ll give you names for them. Beaver City “Beavers”; Minden “Bisons”; Fairbury–”Ak-sar-Bens”(Nebraska spelled backwards) Geneva- “Sodbusters”; Red Cloud–”Sunsetters” or the “Reds”; McPherson-”Pioneers”; Moonlight–”Stars”; Parallel–”Prairie Dogs”(Dem Dawgs).
